History of Christian Star Academy

In preparing youth for life in the changing society of today, our mission at Christian Star Academy is to support the Christ-centered home as the foundation for educating the whole child as a steward accountable to God.  Such an education must be formed upon the absolute authority of God’s Word as found in the Scriptures.

The primary goals of the Christian educators at Christian Star Academy are to educate the whole child and promote total development and stewardship by providing opportunities and encouragement to grow as a responsible and contributing citizen.

These goals and the philosophy of Christian Star Academy were in place with the first early childhood classes in 1981.  The founders of Christian Star Academy Suzanne Feasel and Kathleen Bender Picture 214were veteran teachers of both the elementary and middle school child.  They were strong in their conviction that many problems experienced by students in the upper elementary grades and beyond could have been avoided had the child been given the opportunity to participate in a goal-oriented early childhood program. Such a program would educate the whole child-- academically, emotionally, physically, spiritually, and socially.

In 1983, at the request of the parent body, procedures began for state chartering through the Ohio Department of Education.  After receiving the state charter for kindergarten through the second grade in 1984, chartering procedures continued and new charters were added.  In response to the persistent requests of the parents, Christian Star Academy received state approval to educate children through the tenth grade.

Enrollment was allowed to increase at a slow and guarded rate.  Growth has progressed from 8 students in 1981 to 32 in 1994 and approximately 50 students in 1998.  This growth was limited to accepting new students for the youngest group, nurturing the development of a strong school family or community bond.  Visitors note and comment upon this wholesome quality prevalent at Christian Star Academy.

Christian Star Academy marked another milestone in 1991 when the structure of the educational program moved from the standard placing of students into specific grades to a multiage/nongraded environment. Lilian G. Katz, Demetra Evangelelou, and Jeanette Allison Hartman state in their publication The Case for Mixed-Age Grouping in Early Education that mixed-age grouping resembles family and neighborhood groupings, which throughout history have informally provided much of children’s socialization and education.  They further state that research shows leadership and prosocial behaviors have been observed to increase in the multiage environment.  As Jim Grant, director of the National Alliance of Multiage Educators affirms, “They (the educators) do not link learning to the stop-and-go of a clock or school calendar, but focus on children as they grow on a continuum, independent of rigid grade-level divisions.” This change in the curriculum moved the students from the limitations of textbook knowledge to the vast knowledge available through theme teaching.

The 1997-1998 student body of Christian Star Academy began the school year in their new facility which lends itself well to the multiage/nongraded structure.  All involved with the school have seen and felt God’s direction in the acquisition and renovation of this new building which was the former Hannah Browning Home.  We are proud to fill this building with the Christian love, laughter, and education that was so much a part of its almost 100 year history.

The 1998-1999 school year opened with yet another achievement.  The Ohio Department of Education granted Christian Star Academy a charter upgrade.  This upgrade allows Christian Star Academy to educate students through the tenth grade.

Our 20th year opened with yet another milestone met. That being the granting of another charter upgrade by the Ohio Department of Education. Students may now remain in the program under our state charter through the eleventh grade.

CSA building 06The twenty-fifth year of faithful service to the families of Knox County and the surrounding counties was celebrated with the opening of the 2006-2007 school year. Throughout its 25+ years, Christian Star Academy has enjoyed an excellent track record winning respect from the community, state and local agencies, and other school districts.  The staff has had the privilege of working with students from four counties and more than a dozen communities.  Both private and public schools have welcomed students moving on from Christian Star Academy. The confidence gained by these students enables them to easily adjust to their new schools where they can experience further accomplishments. Such students are proof that Christian Star Academy has laid the foundation for future responsible and contributing citizens.

What does God have in store for us next?  We prayerfully watch and wait for His direction.
